BIOGRAPHY

Mrs. Dionne Newell is the Senior Research Officer - Entomology at the Natural History Museum of Jamaica (a Division of the Institute of Jamaica). In this position, she is responsible for the entomology (insect) collection which includes the oldest specimens in the museum (a moth dating from 1879). She is also responsible for coordinating, planning and administering the activities of the Zoology Department. Activities include the collection, identification, research, preservation and systematic storage of the Division’s zoological collections. She has a strong knowledge of taxonomy to guide her in collecting specimens and adding specimens brought in by researchers. The post also supports national, regional and international biodiversity conservation initiatives. She currently represents the NHMJ on local national biodiversity related committees including the *CITES Scientific Authority.  Mrs. Newell has a B.Sc. – Zoology major/Botany minor and a M.Phil. in Zoology from The University of the West Indies. She is currently working to complete her Ph.D. in Environmental Biology at The UWI where she is investigating the effectiveness of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on biodiversity conservation in Jamaica.  *CITES – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
