Professor Emeritus Tara Prasad Dasgupta (1941 - 2020) joined The University of the West Indies (UWI) in 1974 as a lecturer in physical chemistry and became the first Professor of Inorganic Chemistry within six years. He served as Head of the Chemistry Department (1992–2002), significantly improving its research infrastructure. His research spanned inorganic reaction mechanisms, toxic substances in food, pesticide degradation, and nitric oxide compounds, resulting in over 100 published papers and regional and international recognition. He supervised over 50 graduate students and established key partnerships that enhanced UWI’s scientific standing. Professor Dasgupta was elected a Fellow of several prestigious scientific bodies and was invited by the Nobel Prize Committee to nominate candidates. He received multiple UWI awards and was featured in international biographical references. Beyond chemistry, he served in various administrative and technical roles and founded UWI’s Pesticide Research Laboratory. He also played a key role in establishing the Centre for Advanced Research in Renewable Energy and the region’s first Net Zero Energy Building. Upon retiring in 2006, he was named Professor Emeritus and later, Honorary Research Fellow. A founding member of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Jamaica, he also served as its regional president. He was honored by the Jamaican Government with the Order of Distinction (Commander class) in 2013 and the Institute of Jamaica’s Musgrave Silver Medal in 2019.
