Dr. Trevor Yee (deceased 2023) joined The University of the West Indies Mona in 2001 as the Director of the Natural Products Institute (NPI) in the Faculty of Science and Technology. He was a notable researcher who conducted studies on plants having economic value and made substantial contributions to the field of natural product chemistry and its application. Dr. Yee remained at the NPI until he retired in 2014 and during this time, the work of the NPI included the development of a commercial extraction process for Jamaican Bitterwood, development of botanical pesticide formulations including for the treatment of ticks on cattle and the investigation of a variety of plants, animals and fungal extracts for anti-cancer and cancer prevention properties and the reduction of high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels. This work resulted in the granting of several international patents, which is important in the commercialisation process. Prior to working at The UWI, he worked in the private sector with the National Industries Ltd. and received the Most Improved Exporter award from the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association in 1981. Dr. Yee was awarded the Bronze Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica in 2013 and the Minister's Award for Innovation from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy, and Mining for his research findings. Dr. Yee was also a long-time member and Past President of Jamaica's Natural History Society.
