BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Peter Vogel was a Conservation Ecologist who began teaching at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona in 1979. He was born in Switzerland and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Basel before moving to Jamaica. He became well known for helping to save the Jamaican Iguana from extinction. Sadly, he passed away in 2007. At UWI, Mona, Dr. Vogel worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences. He supervised graduate students and was highly respected by them. Many of his students now work in important conservation roles in Jamaica and abroad. Dr. Vogel was also active in two major environmental groups: the Natural History Society of Jamaica and Birdlife Jamaica. His research focused on solving real-world problems in wildlife conservation. He worked closely with government agencies and community groups to protect animals and their habitats. Some of his key projects included: • Studying gamebirds (like doves and pigeons) to help set rules for hunting seasons. • Researching frogs, parrots, and other animals to support plans for protected areas. • Leading the Jamaica Iguana Research & Conservation Group, which brought together The UWI, Hope Zoo, the Institute of Jamaica, and the Natural Resources Conservation Authority. This group helped bring the Jamaican Iguana back from near extinction and is now seen as one of the most successful conservation efforts in the world. In 2001, the Institute of Jamaica gave Dr. Vogel the Silver Musgrave Medal for Science. This special award honored his outstanding work in Jamaica, even though he was originally from another country.
