Lance Scott is a science educator, researcher and project management specialist who works to understand climate change, how it affects people (especially farmers and rural communities) and how to reduce the negative impacts. As a Research Officer at the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCCJ), he helps improve tertiary education curricula and programmes by integrating the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) so students can learn the skills they need to ensure a sustainable future for Jamaica. He is also conducting research for his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, with a focus on using scientific data through computer modelling and analysis to identify solutions to address climate and disaster risk in Jamaica and the Caribbean. His research aims to help help farmers protect their livelihoods when extreme weather happens.
Before taking on his current role, Mr. Scott has worked on science and education projects for Jamaican government Ministries, agencies, civil society and international organisations. In these roles he has helped design and carry out surveys, conduct research studies, analyse data and develop policies and programmes. His tertiary level education started at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) with a double major in Geography and Geology. He went on to earn a Master of Philosophy degree (M. Phil.) in Geography and his Ph.D. research develops on the same theme of climate risk financing and insurance to assist in recovery post-climate disasters.
